In the famous final moments of Wrath of Khan, Spock goes into the Enterprise’s engine room and restores the warp drive, exposing himself to deadly doses of radiation in the process. “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few,” he tells Kirk through a pane of glass as he slowly collapses to the ground. It’s by far the most famous scene in the Star Trek series, and for Trekkies, it has the same sort of emotional impact that Leonardo DiCaprio’s death scene in Titanic has on teenage girls.
That scene is recreated in the latest clip from Star Trek Into Darkness, except instead of the ship’s engine room, Spock goes into a volcano, and instead of suffering from radiation poisoning, Spock suffers from, well, lava poisoning, I guess.
